Welcome to the ABC Commons, a Wisdom site for Continuing Education for Entrepreneurs, Sales and Business People

This is my intro post to ABC Commons.

Common Sense isn’t so common but it is my intent to help.

First, I did a search online for the definition of commons as I remember a location for learning existed on my college campus during my young years. Here’s what I found.

On a college campus, "the commons" typically refers to shared spaces or buildings designed to support a variety of student needs beyond formal instruction.

There is the Academic Commons: These are often expanded versions of traditional libraries that integrate resources for learning and teaching, including:

Books, journals, and computers, Writing and research support, Technology assistance, Smart classrooms and art exhibits, and Spaces for peer-to-peer collaboration and co-curricular activities. There have been many updates since my years of attending in the late 1970’s.

Examples include Occidental College's Academic Commons include,

Student Commons or Union: These buildings are dedicated to social, organizational, and recreational activities for students. They can provide: Dining services and coffee shops, Student club and lounge spaces, Offices for student affairs and career services, and Event and gathering spaces.

Learning Commons: These are technology-rich, flexible spaces for collaborative study and information sharing, often within academic libraries. They offer: Technology workstations and access to digital resources, Tutoring and skill development programs, Group work areas and individual study spaces, and Makerspaces or creative spaces for hands-on learning.

Shared Community Space: In student housing, "the commons" can refer to shared community rooms or lounges that foster a sense of community among residents. These might include: Board games and activities like a pool table, ample seating and coffee tables, and a Coffee bar with vending machines.

In essence, a college campus commons serves as a central hub or a collection of spaces designed to enhance the student experience by providing a blend of academic, social, and recreational resources in a flexible and accessible environment.

This site is about a learning commons with much of the above, but having to do with wisdom and practical thoughts for entrepreneurs, sales people and business owners. I hope you’ll bookmark this site and visit often.
